We saw in the previous post that New Age thinkers had introduced a paradigm shift in the concept of the soul. Eastern metaphysical thought now mingled in their minds with the experiences of renowned psychics, mediums, healers, channelers, creative visualizers and mystics who believed in Ascended Masters, Angels, Guides, and Teachers mainly in the western world. Frequent reports of rebirths recalled, near death experiences, glimpses of after-life in a coma or through a medium, recollection of past life through regressive hypnotism, Auric phenomena and photography, poltergeist phenomena, telepathy, tele-kinetic feats, out-of-body vision, distance vision, morphic resonance, ESP, and other supernatural and para normal phenomena also worked to develop a new mind-set.
What helped evolve their thinking further were the amazing findings of Quantum Physics and the examination of the para normal by the scientific establishment, though tentatively, as also eminent academic institutions. There was also a growing tribe of courageous and eminent scientists who revealed their thinking about the metaphysical and mystical implications of the new discoveries and findings of science.
They were also influenced by the thought of certain mystical groups in the West which did not find favour with orthodox religion and the church and had become esoteric and secretive. Thus the ideology of the Kabbala. the Rosicrucians, Free Masons, the Hermetic order, Theosophists, Church of Scientology etc all came to have influence on New Age thinkers in formulating their concepts on the soul. The Christian and Jewish concepts of the soul equally played an important role in determining the emerging New Age concept of the soul.
In the Judaic and Christian traditions the concept of the soul is quite different from that of the Eastern traditions, though changing in inflection from faith to faith and order to order. While the Hindu tradition imparts divinity to it and goes so far as to assert that it is a fragment of the Divine Essence, even God in miniature within, the Judaic traditions distinguish it from ‘Spirit’. Though occasionally it is called immortal, the sense of immortality is different from the Hindu tradition. In Hinduism the immortality is an attribute of divinity, whereas in the Jewish and Christian traditions it is immortal in the sense that it outlives the demise of the body, and after the Day of Judgement dwells in Heaven or Hell for all times. Dante’s Divine Comedy shows souls in Heaven, Purgatory and Hell.
Furthermore the soul is not considered eternal in the sense of existing before ‘birth’, as it comes into existence only by God’s will at the time of conception or birth, though remaining in existence thereafter. The soul rules the action of the personality and becomes identified with it and a man’s actions. However as the person does not survive death it is his soul then that becomes him in after-life and is held responsible for the deeds of the person and subject to rewards and punishment. We see therefore that the soul and the person it inhabits are indeed identical. There is here no principle of the eternal purity and divinity of the soul as in Hinduism. Western mystical traditions differed in degrees ( Meister Eckhart) from the orthodox formulation but eventually appear to have gone along with it.
The foregoing Jewish and Christian views of the soul therefore also had their impact, in addition to the other influences discussed, in shaping New Age thinking about the soul.
New Age thinking therefore combined all these elements, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, mystical, scientific, esoteric, psychic, and paranormal in constructing a new and unique concept of the soul which differed both from that postulated by the Eastern faiths and Christian and Jewish traditions of yore.
As I began my blog with a consideration of the Hindu concept of the soul, I propose to compare and contrast the New Age concept with that and in the process we would also see how the concept differs substantially from the Jewish and Christian concepts.
We saw in the previous post that New Age thought adopted several features of the Hindu concept: (1) The soul is eternal, immortal and ethereal ( as distinct from being created at birth by the will of God) (2) The soul is subject to incarnation on the earthly plane (3) The soul is subject to reincarnation through numerous life-times.
Aside from these features, where there is concurrence with Hinduism, new elements are introduced which are a departure. Though the New Age soul is ethereal, immortal, and eternal, it is not a fragment of God residing within the body. This position substantially changes the concept of the soul from Hinduism because the entire history of Hindu worship, spirituality, mysticism, music, dance, literature i.e. culture hinges on the divinity within. If the soul is not divine then the poetic yearnings of Indian mystics, their songs and prayers are all irrelevant and in vain.
The New Age thought is close to the Christian and Jewish traditions when it holds that the soul rules the personality unlike the Hindu position that it neither dictates to the ego-personality-body nor participates in its activities, thus in Hinduism the soul does not assume responsibility for the personality’s actions and remains untainted, as God himself remains untainted by the activities of man.
New age thought then postulates that the soul incarnates to heal negatavities that develop within it. The soul is likened to an enormous body of light and energy in ethereal realms corresponding to Sol in the solar system. On this ethereal sun, sun-spots develop for some reason requiring healing. It then engages in a massive reduction of its enormous energy to create a personality through which it incarnates. The entire soul does not incarnate as it is too powerful and grand. Only the portion of the soul that has corrupted becomes the personality and arrives on the physical plane in birth. This appears to have echoes of ‘original sin’. The personality is therefore that part of the soul which needs to heal. The rest of the glorious radiant soul remains in the ethereal realms. The personality which is the souls negative part now becomes the vehicle for the souls healing and eventual evolution to higher levels of ‘vibration’.
At the end of a life-time the incarnated part returns to the mother ship either improved, healed or become worse and if necessary is then returned through another personality for further improvements to Earth School. This of course is at variance with the Hindu concept where the personality alone acts and accumulates Karmic effects till they are eliminated after many life-times. The only similarity is that in both cases the personality is at full liberty to act and can neither be dictated to nor forced to do the right thing.
The other major difference is that of ‘choice’. In the Hindu concept there is no question of choice of incarnation as the Law of Karma determines the pros and cons of a lifetime and arranges a new body which would help in resolving negatavities. The soul in that case assumes the new body arranged by the Law of Karma without protest. In the New Age version while there is a law of Karma it has no role in determining the next incarnation which the soul is to inhabit. The massive mother ship soul force uses its own volition to create a personality of its choosing from the parts of itself it wishes to heal, as Gary Zukav calls it – ‘a unique and perfectly suited instrument’ for the particular incarnation.
However in both the Hindu and New Age versions the soul as Indweller (Hindu) and the Mother Ship (New Age) remain the source of good inspiration and wisdom for the personality which in both cases is free to ignore it.
In addition to the Mother soul the New age thinking also introduces Guides, Teachers, Angels and Masters who assist in aligning the personality with the soul to heal it. These entities are also souls but ones without blemishes and at a higher level of vibration. The splintered Mother soul seeks their help not only to align the personality but also in conceiving a new personality for further healing. The entire purpose of life on the physical plane is to enable souls to heal and evolve.
Whatever the argument or cosmology, both versions emphasize the need for human evolution but each takes a different cultural approach for the identical goal. While the New Age version is attractive as it firmly places the initiative in the hands of the soul as the agent of action rather than leaving it to a Karmic fatalism, it in the final analysis goes against the grain of both Eastern and Christian/Jewish belief systems. For instance how would the long history of belief and emotion tied to the concept of divinity within be able to reconcile to the new paradigm? It cannot afford to lose the anchor of its cultural moorings. On the other hand for Christianity the problem would be the concept of rebirth and a soul not answerable before God on the day of judgement but its own master to deal with its need to heal. The new concepts would only be palatable to those who are not tied to their traditional moorings, but have taken their ship to the high seas for dropping anchor at another shore.
So there is an identity to an individual soul, a separateness from other souls that make it a distinct entity. This would be something like an Ego? The individual soul is conserved dispite the disintegration of the bodies that it occupies? And there is a continuity of the existence of the soul as distinct, separate entity through time?

And also if this is all true, then it is inappropriate to refer to it as my soul, since clearly the soul is the one that can claim ownership of the body, and not vice versa?

Indrajit, what do you think about the entity of ‘the holy spirit’ in christian thinking compared to brahman or ‘universal essence’? In my experience this is maybe more alike the hindu-thinking about the soul, than the concept of soul in christian thinking itself. That indeed seems to be individualised and divided from divinity.

But if one were to have ownership of the other, the soul would have sovereignty over the body? The body, would never have a convincing argument as to why it owned the soul?

For me there are two things, what religeons and phylosofies say about it and what I think myself. Personally I dont believe there is a ‘soul’ as a autonomous entity with a own will or power. But I think its interesting to learn more about eastern (and other) thinking on the concept of soul.

In the Hindu concept the soul has no power as such to make you do anything at all and is a passive witness, almost like the Universe is a witness to your actions – its only role is inspiration, intuition and guidance as the unimposing voice of the conscience – the only power here is you the body free to act and assume responsibility for your actions

in posing the question we have to be clear which concept one is referring to or there would be endless confusion. In the Hindu concept there is no ownership of either – the soul is called the divine spark that dwells within the body, so it is called Antaryami or Indweller, it dwells in the house but does not own it, nor does the house own the tenant – when in India someone says my soul (Atma) he means my innermost essence which is divine not that he owns it or possesses it – either way possession is not relevant – hope i am making sense Robert

Mart, I have always been intrigued by the concept of the holy spirit ( the Father and the son and the Holy ghost, Amen) and will try to research more on what it actually means, but you may be right that the 2 concepts are close – what i have understood about the Christian concept of the soul, and i may be wrong, is that it is totally different from the Hindu one, though carrying a similar name – one is a divine spirit (holy) the other is just a spirit which is the non material part of the body and held responsible for its acts as if it were doing the acts itself. – the Hindu soul cannot go to heaven or hell except in the experience of the next incarnation which may be similar to that, but not for all times – for it, being attached to the body is already ‘hell’ and the only heaven would be rejoining and merging finally with the Divine Essence.

According to my memory and interpretation of the christian faith and what the church, my primary school and my parents told me, you are quite right about the classical meaning of the soul in this thinking.
This differs indeed much with the hindu-ideas, by what I have read from you till now. This hindu-interpretation is closer to my own thinking now than the christian phylosophy. But this holy-spirit always has intrigued me too. I will try to fund out some more about in relation to your reseaerch on the soul. Friendly regards.

Reading somewhat around (and re-meeting a part of my past a bit) on ‘the holy spirit’ I can add this: the holy spirit in christian faith is one indivisible part of the trinity of God the father, the son an ided the holy spirit. As you read through some articles about this its to understand as a divine inspiration, a entity of thoughts, feelings, ideas that can inspire you to act, think, feel or speak in the ghost of God.
Symbols for the holy spirit are water, a dove, salvation, fire/flames and wind/breath.
The bible also speaks of the holy spirit as an indweller.
So all together it has some features in common with brahman or the universal essence in Hindu-belief I think. Much more anyway than the the ideas about the soul in christian faith.
I’m curious if these concepts of brahman and the holy spirit are connected somewhere in history. I would not be suprised by that.

without being chauvanistic i wonder if you knew that Sanskrit is considered the mother of indo-europesn group of languages – for instance mother = matri, brother= bhratri, father/pater= pitri and as i discovered hundreds of words like that – swan in german is hans (lufthansa airlines) in sanskrit Hansa endless similarities – european scholars have given their opinion that sanskrit is the mother tongue – sanskrit is the language of the Hindu scriptures too, the Gita and so many others – not difficult to imagine the passage of ideas when the source of languge is the same.
I find great similarities in the cosmology too
Father (God)= Ishvara
Son = Avatar
Holy ghost = Brahman
indeed connected – we all are lol

Following your inspiring odessey on the soul and a lot of connecred themes I’m asking myself what this ideas mean to my own thinking about the soul.
For me it is not the concept of a body-ego connected individual soul that inspires me. I don’t belief in something me-related that will survive my body-ego after dying and that is eternal or will re-incarnate. Maybe there is, but I dont need it to live a consciuos and rich life.
What I do find important is the idea to be conjuncted with the all, the cosmos, nature if you wish and the others. And by that also having responsibility to be a contributing part of it.
For me this is the universal essence or brahman or god.
To be conscious of this in my live and trying to contribute actively to a good and durable world, starting with my direct surroundings, is my personal soul-connection with this ‘supersoul’. And by living this way in my idea I’m already -interpersonally, or cultural- ‘reincarnating’.
Also physically I’m already transforming and exchanging with the physical ‘all’ constantly. Death is only a final step in this for my body-ego. ‘I’ am already ‘reincarnated’ in many many new forms then, material as well as mentally.
I this way of thinking I dont need the idea if a personal soul-entity that will survive me. In my opinion this need is arising from fear of physical death. If you are a part of the all and universal essence in my opinion you dont have to be afraid of a big ‘nothing’.

-I entirely agree with your line of thinking
– the odyssey is to inform myself on a subject which interests me as it is good to know what the great faiths and people have tried to find on the subject
– i believe that the sum and substance of what we do and are does not dissapear at death but gets somehow recorded in the cosmos – remember how our minds record everything – in the same manner our memory remains in the cosmos – and evolves through future incarnations so that the complex of our individuality is not lost but keeps moving forward – how this may happen or through what mechanism no one can say for sure – and this ‘continuity’ which i feel in my guts is a belief that does not arise out of fear – matter cannot be ‘destroyed’ according to science and i believe neither can we be, that is, our persona – but what you say about the the right approach to living and being connected with the ‘All’ is indeed the only right approach – if i have divinity in my heart and need to get close to it and be inspired by it then i like the idea as my entire cultural upbringing leads me to think in that way – which is really more or less the same as what you say. Good wishes.

Of interrest, a couple well known physicists recently wrote a book concerning the total energy of the universe. Their conclusion is that the net sum is zero!
From the point of view of a creator this is very economical since if the universe started from nothing, is at any point in time nothing, and if it ends it will be nothing.
It seems like an incredibly perfect system to me!
Also if the soul is divine spark and inspiration, this means it interacts with our physical being, and so must have some commonality with it in order to interact? There must be common mechanisms, or at least one?

Indrajit, for me its special to meet someone from a faraway continent and culture who thinks the same on this basic themes. I dont find this kind of encounters nearby so often. So thanks to internet and wordpress that we can have this kind of exchanges. Very interesting to live in this periode in which our world becomes a global village.
About our ‘remains’ after and during our lives. For me the practical ‘reincarnation’ happens every day when we are in inreraction with eachother and exchanging our ungoing insights and thoughts. So you are already part of my mindset now and I will use it and teansform it to others, and by that to our collective consciousness and cultural evolutions. For me this is the way in wich what we do, think and are is spread and ‘recorded’ in our cosmos. Maybe there are other ways too that I dont know, but this way of passing it on is already enough to me.
Pleased to meet you. Mart.

I will not discuss the continuing of our persona after death. Maybe we will, maybe not. I don’t have such indications for this in my dreams or life. But maybe I miss a sixth sense for it.
We will see/.I’m not lying awake of it 🙂
