Lion Capital Sarnath 250 BC India’s state emblem today

Sometimes a visit to a museum can produce strange impressions – my poem is about one such impression.

                                             ANOTHER  INDIA

In the museum

The lion capital surmounts

A bygone empire

And stately handsome gods

Transfix, as no temple deity

Could ever aspire.

 Graceful postures

Hold the secrets of transcendence

And ornaments of stone are real.

From the corners of his granite eye

Twinkles a millennium

With an inedible smile of nostalgia.

And some important events are here –

A birth, a rider, dancers,

Inscriptions of a donor.

Signs forgotten, insignia,

Lotus medallions, another

India

 Moving, astir,

Shining through a sculptor’s inspiration

Like a restless tiger in a cage,

Before its extinction.
