If one asleep desires no desire whatsoever, sees no dream whatsoever, that is deep sleep ( sushupta ). (This) .. deep sleep state (is) unified, just a cognitive mass, consisting of bliss, enjoying bliss, ….. is awareness.
This is the lord of all. This is the all knowing. This is the inner controller ( antaryamin). This is the source of all, for this is the origin and the end of beings.
( But that which is even beyond this deep sleep state, is ) not inwardly cognitive, not outwardly cognitive, …. not a cognitive mass, not cognitive, not non-cognitive, unseen, with which there can be no dealing, ungraspable, having no distinctive mark, non-thinkable, that cannot be designated, the essence of the assurance of which is the state of being one with ones own self, the cessation of development, tranquil, benign, without a second ( advait ) – such they think is the fourth ( final superconscious state even beyond deep sleep – Turiya), That is the Self ( Atman ). That should be discerned.
…….. He who knows this, with his self enters the Self – yea, he who knows this!

It is indeed quite remarkable – a kind of secret insight – In Deep Sleep we become the ‘Absolute’ briefly, every night !
Wow – Our being expands to embrace the whole created universe and becomes more – coterminous with IT – thus as Yogananda asserts the ‘force’ enters our body and cleanses it of most of its toxity deleting cancers and reviving health every night- we therefore arise rejuvenated where when we went to rest we were dead exhausted ( much like the earth itself, stale at night is rejuvenated by the force in the fresh morning) – this connection with the Universal spirit or force is also possible through meditation, less perfectly though, and finally at death briefly before Karmik compulsions urge another reincarnation – thus Yogananda urges that we are mindful in our meditations of brief breathless states
when we stop breathing very briefly ( 5 second or more depending on our health) with intake of the breath or again after exhaling, always strictly under the guidance of a Guru or an adept Yogi – to experience that connection with IT – never endangering health, that is – when we thus pause in Yogic breathing we approximate that flow of the force however briefly – as in deep sleep or death – (this so called breathlessness I must underline must never be done without a Guru or yogi’s guidance).
The Mandukya Upanishad amazing insight about Deep sleep state being a blissfully divine state of being is what is truly remarkable and why i felt i needed to share it here.

I am learning so much from you. I had a whole life reading on October 8 by Robert Thibodeau. He has a lot of talks on youtube …… he runs The Mayflower Bookshop in Berkley, MI and I got most all of my spiritual texts from him. The reading was so amazing that at one point we switched from him talking and me responding to me getting what he was saying by osmosis. He has set a program of study for me and asks that I call him to discuss what I think I’ve learned ……. and he will either affirm or redirect my thinking. It is the first guru/devotee relationship I’ve ever had in “real” life. And reading your words also gives me that same feeling of learning by osmosis. Now I need to get out my book on The Upanishads and study it too. Thanks my dear –
